As detailed in a statement released by Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, the social media giant has revamped its post, video and photo ranking system that dictates the content that appears in users’ newsfeeds. Zuckerberg has announced that the new algorithm will be prioritizing posts by family and friends, leaving public content – courtesy of small businesses – in the dust.

You’ll start seeing more posts from friends that have spurred lively debates in the comments and in turn, less cooking videos from brands and publications. This is part of Facebook’s effort to help people spend time on the site in a more meaningful way. According to Zuckerberg, “Video and other public content have exploded on Facebook in the past couple of years. Since there’s more public content than posts from your friends and family, the balance of what’s in News Feed has shifted away from the most important thing Facebook can do — help us connect with each other.”
